NHS Band 5 Interview Questions (and How to Answer Them)
30 September 2026 6 min read
Practise these 6 questions with the AI panelBand 5 interviews are usually a panel of two or three people: a ward manager, a senior nurse and sometimes HR or a patient representative. They score you against the person specification and the NHS values, so every answer should show evidence, not just intentions.

"Why do you want to work on this ward / in this trust?"
The questions you're most likely to be asked
- 01Why do you want to work on this ward / in this trust?
- 02Tell us about a time you escalated a deteriorating patient.
- 03How would you prioritise a busy shift with several unwell patients?
- 04What would you do if you saw a colleague doing something unsafe?
- 05How do you ensure patient dignity and confidentiality?
- 06Tell us about a time you dealt with a complaint or a difficult relative.
- 07What does safeguarding mean to you, and when would you raise a concern?
What the panel is really scoring
Panels score patient safety first. If a question has a safety angle, such as escalation, medication errors or safeguarding, say clearly what you would do, who you would tell and how you would document it. Mention NEWS2, SBAR and your trust's escalation policy where relevant.
They also look for the NHS values: working together for patients, respect and dignity, commitment to quality of care, compassion, improving lives, and everyone counts. Weave these in naturally rather than reciting them.
A simple structure that works
Use STAR: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Spend most of your time on the Action, which is what you personally did, and finish with the Result and what you learned. Newly qualified nurses can use examples from placements; just be clear about your role and your supervisor's.
Practise out loud
Reading answers is not the same as saying them under pressure. A mock panel that asks follow-up questions is the fastest way to find the gaps in your examples before the real day.
