Why they ask it
It's a warm-up that shows how well you can summarise yourself and whether you understand what matters for this role.
Answer template
- 1Present: who you are professionally right now
- 2Past: one or two achievements that prove you fit this role
- 3Future: why this job is the logical next step
Worked example
I'm a customer service team leader with five years in busy contact centres. In my current role I lead a team of eight, and last year we raised our satisfaction score from 78 to 91 percent by redesigning how we handle complaints. Before that I trained every new starter on our systems, which is where I found I love developing people. I'm now looking for an operations role where I can use that mix of service and leadership on a bigger scale, which is exactly what this position offers.
Keep it under two minutes and make it about work, not your life story.
