How to Answer "Tell Me About Yourself" in an Interview

Practise these 4 questions with the AI panel

It's usually the first question, and it sets the tone for the whole interview. The interviewer doesn't want your life story. They want a 60–90 second pitch on why you're a fit for this role.

"Tell me about yourself."

Use present, past, future

  • 01Present: what you do now and one achievement you're proud of.
  • 02Past: the experience or training that led you here, and the skills it gave you.
  • 03Future: why this role and this organisation are the logical next step.

Example for a career changer

"I'm currently a team leader in hospitality, where I manage a team of eight and recently cut our complaint rate by a third. Before that I spent three years on the front line, which taught me to stay calm under pressure and really listen to people. I've always been drawn to care, I've been volunteering at a care home on weekends, and this healthcare assistant role lets me use those people skills where they matter most."

Keep it tight

Practise it out loud and time yourself. If it's over two minutes, cut the past section. End on why you want this job, which naturally leads into the next question.
